Why are the traditional colors of Hanukkah blue and silver?

I’ve looked all over, any people seem to say that it it because of the Israeli flag, but that makes no sense – the flag is white, and the colors have always been blue and silver. In addition, Hanukkah blue is any shade of blue, whereas the flag is only a certain shade of blue.
Also, Rosh Hasshanah and Passover aren’t blue and white, or blue and silver.

These “traditional” colors haven’t been around very long. But think about it, once Christmas had pre-empted red and green (and gold), what colors are left?
Within the 20th century, Hanukkah candles once were manufactured all orange. When electric-hanukkiah window displays became popular in NYC Jewish neighborhoods in the 1950′s, all the electric bulbs used in them were orange. My family may have had the first one on our block! But within a few years you could stand on a Brooklyn street corner and pick out the Jewish families up and down the street by the reflected orange glow of the electric-hanukkiot. So I guess if there *was* a “traditional Hanukkah-color”, 50 years ago it was orange!

However, the Jewish people have always identified with celestial blue. It’s the distinctive color of t’helet, the mollusk dye which we were commanded by G-d to use in tying fringes (tzitzit) on our garments. That is the reason that color was chosen for the Israeli flag.
I think that the proliferation of blue and silver as a Hanukkah theme nowadays is a matter of merchandizing and marketing–I suspect the marketing strategy is, if red and green decor will sell for Xmas, then do the same in blue with a menorah on it and sell it for Hanukkah. The silver is just to make it more “wintery”. You don’t see this done for other Jewish holidays because they aren’t in proximity to Xmas, so they don’t receive the same barrage of marketing. As far as the mainstream secularized-Christian culture is concerned, Hanukkah is the only Jewish holiday they seem to know about.
