Black Stripe

What is the yellow board with a black vertical stripe situated next to UK roads?

It is usually a rectangular board, mostly yellow background with a central black line running vertically from top to bottom of the board. Curiously, it is offset at an angle pointing towards the sky. It is usually on a stand alone post, approx 6ft or more from ground. Sometimes it looks like a solar panel, but is mainly found alongside main UK roads. There are more and more being installed every year. For example, there is one stuck in the ground at Cribbs Causeway, Bristol on the road where the new B&Q junction looks across the M5 motorway (on the approaching Asda side, between the motorway and the adjacent road.) Any ideas?

It’s hard to tell what you mean without seeing it, but it could easily be a solar panel or it could be a pipeline marker.

There are many solar panels by the side of main roads in the UK these days. They are used to power things like lights to illuminate road signs.

The fact that it isn’t completely black leads me to think it might actually be a pipeline marker. These are basically coloured markers on top of poles that are placed above buried gas and petroleum pipelines.
