Why is violin rosin in bits and pieces?

Why do I see violin cases with little bits of broken and smashed looking rosin pieces in them?
The piece I have looks like a smooth round shiny cake of amber, so why does it look like somebody through these rosin bits on the floor and smashed them?

Because someone smashed or broke them, probably.

Rosin is sold as solid cakes. If you see pieces, it’s because a cake got broken.
