Verizon – A Pathetic Company

Verizon is a pathetic company, but many, if not most or even all, of the Baby Bells operate the same way. Indeed, possibly all telecoms steal, but this article will only touch on the egregiousness exhibited by Verizon, for billing atrocities that once caused the company to be fined twenty five million greenbacks yes, that is 2 and 5 followed by 6 zeroes after them. But that’s nothing in comparison to what they notched up in their first 6 years of existence: three hundred million greenbacks a 3 followed by 10 zeroes! Yet one of their up to date chairmen retired freely after a number of years of making fifty-four million dollars per annum. Ever question why it costs such a lot to have a telephone?

Cell phones are much worse, naturally, as anybody born before the devices might understand. anyhow, first things first: in the beginning, there was Ma Bell, more officially known as Atlantic Telephone Telegraph, or AT&T for short. For virtually a century it was actually the largest company in the world, employing all of 1,000,000 folks and handling American telephony in its totality. Nevertheless the times changed, and the new political climate didn’t favour monopolies. The company was broken up in the early ’80s, split up into separate regional companies jointly nicknamed Baby Bells. therefore, some handled only the Southwest, others the eastern seaboard, and still others the heartland of the country. Verizon, at the time known as Bell Atlantic, received part of the northeast as its territory.

Curiously in the 20 years since their split, the Baby Bells have frequently bought one another, reuniting to form bigger corporations ; therefore for example, Nynex. In fact this process began in the first decade of their break-up, as a natural business process under the philosophy where growth is regarded key to survival. And as the original reason for central authority intervention appeared to have once been resolved ( because the telecommunications industry ultimately admitted of some real competition ), they were pretty much left alone by the govt. which, in a democracy, can suggest changing policies dependent on the political climate.

Left alone indeed! Instead of a national monopoly, it transpired that all the government did was put regional monopolies in its place which monopolies proceeded to re-gel by buying each other up such that out of the original 8 different firms there remain only 3 corporations today. And these three firms, of which Verizon is one, are raking in the money like it’s Xmas and Hanukah every day of the week, with all types of costs, charges, and surcharges on top of coughing up for any telephone calls essentially made! And that’s just the beginning of the gravy train, what with intentional overbilling and tax breaks for major framework projects never delivered.
