Cheese is a special delicacy on the island; served in paste form, fresh and uncooked. Meat, meanwhile, including pork, beef, chicken, or rabbit, is often slow-cooked in liquid and served as a sauce or stew. Vegetarians are also catered for with delicious veggie stews filled with tomatoes, potatoes, onions, maize and peppers. Gofio – a cereal paste prepared with grains such as maize, toasted wheat, or barley – is frequently served with stew. Pork fans should try ‘fiesta meat’, pork which spiced and marinated and served with potatoes as a side dish.

You can also try a traditional Tenerife egg dish comprising of mole eggs served with a sweet syrup made from sugar and egg yolk. Some other delicious dishes to try include fried chorizo, sweet black pudding and ‘tollos’ (dried and season strips of shark).

Numerous vineyards can be found on Tenerife and the northern region is renowned for both red and white wines, the perfect accompaniment to the local food. After a busy day of wine tasting, visiting museums or just taking in the sites, holidaymakers can sit down and relax with a gorgeous meal and a glass of vino.
