New Ways of Viewing Anime Episodes
Online streaming of videos has made a big difference for fans of any film or animation genre, but for those eager to view anime episodes, this new technology has been a godsend. In the past, these fans had few options. They could buy a video or eventually a DVD, or wait for the broadcasting choices of television networks. Given that TV series tended to be geared more toward the young Saturday morning cartoon group, and buying DVDs on a large scale was expensive, there weren’t many ways to watch anime free until online streaming was developed.
As video streaming technology became big on the internet through the 2000s, the best-loved episodes of an anime series became much easier to see. Many series were placed online, and people not only could watch streaming anime but could download it to their computers as well. Of course, this immediately created copyright issues, because most people who put episodes online did it without the permission of the licensed holders; the big distribution companies. And those who downloaded episodes were not paying for them.
After the first knee-jerk reaction to sue everything that moved, the distribution companies relaxed and devised other ways to respond to people who wanted to view anime episodes online. Rather than attacking them, these companies created video portals and arranged to stream anime series for free. FUNimation Entertainment (www.funimation.com), as an example, put vast amounts of its anime library online. This drew a multitude of fans to its site, many of whom exercised the download-to-own option, buying episodes for a fee. This video streaming option creates great publicity and advertising, yet doesn’t shut out fans who simply have no money.
Streaming technologies have allowed another new trend for watching anime episodes. Often the impetus for illegal downloads was that it sometimes took new series three or four years to get from Japan to North America. But the latest development sees companies like GDH/Gonzo and FUNimation streaming anime from certain series on their video portals mere hours after each episode has aired in Japan. This answers fans’ desire to see new series immediately, often making them more willing to wait for later downloads. The new technologies have made fans much happier, and allowed distributors some new options as well.

Love Kraft $8.78 Not, seemingly, an album about the Welsh band’s adoration of boxed macaroni and cheese products. Then again, with Super Furry Animals it’s impossible to tell. Its seventh album is aimed squarely at those who find the Flaming Lips a little too timid, Brian Wilson too rational, the Arcade Fire too conventional – essentially people who will always pick Donovan over Dylan. “Zoom” opens things with wai… |
