How Do I Get Shoe Polish or Furniture Polish Out Of My Carpet?

I have written several articles on how you can remove different types of stains.  The first few paragraphs are similar in some of the articles because they are an important part of each spot removal process.  Some of the procedures are similar, however all are important parts of the spot removal puzzle.

CAUTION: Certain cleaning products found in most homes can cause irreparable damage to you carpet. Bleaches, tile cleaners, mildew removers, oven cleaners and drain cleaners are very strong chemicals that can dissolve carpet fibers. Acne medications containing benzyl peroxide, very powerful bleach, are capable of permanently damaging your carpet and other fabrics as well.  One very important fact to remember is NEVER use a product with the letters OXY or OXI in them.  Regardless of what the label says there is a slow acting oxidizing bleach in it that can permanently remove the color from your carpet. None of these cleaning agents are of any use on this type of stain.

There are many products on the market to help you clean stains. And, there are many ways that you can clean them without chemicals at all. 90% of all soiling materials that are spilled on carpet can be completely removed with cold water. But, the trick is, when you have a spill you need answers and you need them now! Here are some helpful hints that will provide you with some solutions when it comes to handling carpet stains.

THE REMEDIES BELOW ARE FOR CARPET ONLY! 

The stains listed here can be very daunting to remove.  A mistake can cause permanent carpet damage.

FURNITURE POLISH or SHOE POLISH 

First treat as an OIL-BASED STAIN as follows.  Blot as much as possible with white paper towels. Apply the special over the counter oil and grease spot remover, such as “Afta”, “Carbona”, or “Energine”, to the paper towel and repeat blotting.  (Protective gloves should be worn as the solvent will quickly remove the skins oils and could cause a skin irritation).  Do not pour or spray directly onto the carpet pile as damage to the latex backing or adhesive could result.  Use the paper towels to transport the solvent to the carpet.  Repeat as often as necessary allowing at least 15 minutes of drying time between applications.  Applying to much solvent at one time, without some drying time between, can weaken the carpets adhesive backing.

PROVIDE LOTS OF VENTELATION!

DO NOT USE ANY FLAMMABLE SOLVENTS! 

If stain remains, continue to blot the stained area with white towels dampened with cool water until there is no more transfer of the stain onto the towels. 

If some stain remains, treat as a Water Soluable Stain as follows..

Absorb as much as possible with white towels, paper or cloth.  Blot the stained area with towels dampened with cool water until no staining material transfers onto the towel.  Spray or pour a little water onto the stain and continue to blot until carpet is as dry as possible. Do not saturate or over wet the stained area!  This will only make the stain spread and could cause damage to the pad or floor.  In some cases, depending on which spot you are dealing with, you may have to apply a small amount of a mild detergent solution. Remember: if a small amount of soap won’t remove the spot, more soap will probably make it worse! Use a solution of an over thecounter mild liquid detergent: no more than 1/4 teaspoon of detergent  to 32 ounces of cool water.  A clear, non-bleach liquid dishwashing detergent such as “Joy” or clear “Ivory” is recommended.  Do not use detergents that are creamy or cloudy because they can leave a sticky residue which can hold any odor that might be there.  Spray lightly onto the spot and blot repeatedly with white towels, working from the outer edge in toward the center of the spot to prevent the spot from spreading. Rinse thoroughly by spraying with clean cool water, and then blot or extract until spot is almost dry.
